78 cruiser build

This is my 78 fj40 that i picked up a few months ago for 2000$ Has a crate 350 4speed 4.88 gears locrite front and posi in the rear. I plan on slapn some 1 tons under it in the future. for now i am going to build a full roll cage, new fenders and some bucket seats.

The fenders were more bondo and rust than metal so i just threw them out. all the fenders were held on b ratchet straps when i bought it

the new seats

ill post more pics along the way

THAT IS HIS NAME! I JUST DELETED HIS # OUT OF MY PHONE A FEW DAYS AGO. IT SAID "JUSTIN 78 CRUISER", AND I FIGURED HE HAD SOLD IT, SO I DIDN'T NEED HIS # ANYMORE.

oh and awesome seats all you need now is some 5 piont harnesses and call it good

Sweet just get some shelf brackets from lowes and bolt those seats in place. I begin to see a defiant pattern with sawzalls and older toyota rigs...slvrbck went to town on his..I heard he actually got so crazy with his sawzall that he caught it on fire...

well about 10 months and what seems like a lifetime ago i started this thread, bought the truck 3 weeks before i found out the wife was preagnant with our first child. So you can see how this truck has been doomed from the start but with some wheelin and dealing and a few good buddies this project has stuck around just enough to even be called a "project". For the first few months we kinda spun our wheels you could say. We were working with a harbor freight bendor and thats realy all that needs to be said about that well about 5 months ago I met Clay, and him being the stand up guy that he is lent me his bender and a few pointers and really saved the build. So with the new baby and trying to find fab time in 87toyboxs revolving door garage, i worked every night, lunchbreak, and weekend day i could get and its all starting to pay off.

so since the sawzall trigger stuck and cut, well everything it was nice to kinda start from scratch. So i thought, what i thought was going to be quick and painless was far from it. once we cut everything off you could see all the shit under that needed attention.

first we made up some seat mounts

after the seat mounts i dont have any pics except for a few weeks ago till now. 87toybox may have a few on his camera that he can post.

So since this project was in and out of the garage, there was no shortage of rust anywhere

so after many many hours of mind numbing grinding and alot of from dave, i took a mental note to never do that again.
Got all the rust off and painted. i would love to say that we used proper masks and ventaltion this time, but there is no fun in that. the only differance is that we didnt sit around and laugh and take pictures this time and washed it off right away. no pics of us painted up this time. maybe dave can repost the pic from his cage, same outcome

we finished up when it was dark so i will try to get some better pics

got the fenders moced up with construction paper will post pics of them when finished

have a few more things to do to the cage. fenders, i have a stinger already bunt up (thanks Phil ) and just all the little things.

the truck as a whole is far from done, but this phase is almost to an end. ill post more pics as they come.

looks good,

its hard to cut up a classic like that. we cut up a mint fj40 just to add some bigger axles, at the end all we had was a FJ hood, dash and two feet of frame.

weekend was great couldnt have asked for a better time.

Still have a few little things to button up this phase of fab. then its on to MUCH needed!!!! suspension and power stearing.

I want to thank Clay for not only lending me his bender but also for use of his trailer to get my ass out to prison hill today.
and a BIG BIG thanks to Dave (87toybox) for not only the help on this project but also the spot to do it.
