Shaving a Dana 60

Anyone done it? It looks pretty east and its a good way to get some clearence. My question is do I HAVE to strip the axle down to nothing to do it? Or can I leave the guts in it? I have never messed with gears before and dont wanna fuck it all up.

Here is a decent thread on the matter----->

Fo show, but the one thread said just to grind it down. No fab work there just grinding it would take a long time but should not damage anything inside

i believe the reason they remove everything is because you are supposed to pre-heat the cast before welding on it. dont quote me on that though. there is no fucking way i'm gonna sit there for hours and hours grinding on it. i'll use the torch or a plasma to make quick work of it. i really just wanna know if anyone has done it while leaving the internals alone. i dunno i'm just trippin cause i've got soo much loot in that axle.

here is another page on it----->http://www.4x4wire.com/tech/shaved60/

same thing. he does it to a bare housing.

I shaved a 14 bolt and we left the carrier and gears in there. It was a pain in the ass to clean it out after it was all said and done but I didn't have to deal with carrier bearings and all that bullshit.

I used a sawzall and cut the bottom section off, shaped a plate to cover the cut section, preheated the center section and then welded it up. I used break clean and compressed air to clear out housing as best I could. Then we ran it for a couple days, drained and refilled it.

The way i figure, it can't be any worse than welding up the spider gears when the carrier is still in the truck. So why not?

WD40 the hell out of the carrier and ring gear (anti spater) and wrap it up thats all I do with yota diffs when I weld the spiders in them but the pre heat for cast may burn melt whatever you you wrap it with
