You already did all the fun stuff(chassis, links, shocks, mount engine/trans...) now all the time consuming stuff that looks like nothing is getting done stuff starts!!! Lack of motivation likes to set in because it looks almost done...but is far from it!!!

Yea I'll be starting some of that this week , try to hammer out the interior somewhat and get the chassis apart for final welding but it's rough to keep working on it!

I would get all the seat mounts, battery, computer, pedals, panels and anything else shy of wiring and plumbing done before you rip it down for final welding....

For me the first test drive makes all the effort and time spent worth it....but ya gotta get there!!!

If ya run into any issues making it all work ,post them up! There is a ton of buggy building experience in this area.

what scan / gauge setup is that, with one LCD? are you planning on running it as your main source of engine information?

It's a ultragauge, I'll be using this, the check engine light you suggested and a mech oil pressure gauge. That's it!

yeah, now I remember discussing it. I just checked out there website again and ordered one. I'd like to offer / distribute them with my engines. I forgot but it appears to do everything I want. the only thing i don't see listed that is helpful when using the 4l60/80 trans is trans-temp.

From my engine manual and my recommendations:

Oil Pressure Sensor & Oil Accumulator
For an aftermarket oil pressure sensor and/or oil accumulator the following ports should be used. They are primary oil passages, showing oil pressure at the crank, rods, cam, and general “lower end” of the engine. The factory oil pressure sensor that is located in the rear, behind the intake manifold is a secondary passage and for the ECM on 2003+. Although aftermarket billet aluminum blocks can be bought, the factory port block near the oil filter can be easily drilled and tapped to standard NPT threads for access to the primary oil passage. Otherwise use the forward port shown below with metric to standard adapter.

For any kind of rock-crawling application I HIGHLY recommend the use of an oil accumulator. The Moroso or Canton 3 quart versions are the best: MOR-23900

ALSO: for hardcore crawlers I recommend a secondary oil pressure switch wired directly to a BIG RED light on the dash. You can find them at Summit and switch ground (12-) when below 7psi and activate the light. When you see the light you know your accumulator is starting to be active and you have limited time until you need to shut the motor down. keep an eye on the actual gauge at that point.

NOTE: ALL 6.0L's come with an oil cooler block / lines at the filter. YOU CAN NOT JUST CAP THESE PORTS. The port block you see in the pictures is on a 4.8 / 5.3 and allows the oil to "loop" through it.

Yea there ya go, but I foUnd the adapter to use that plug near the front of the block so that's my plan. Forgot about a accumulator tho....

that forward port is also the one to prime the oil pump through on a newly built, dry motor. since you can't turn the oil pump with a drill through the distributor galley like old school motors, you have to poor oil down this port to fill the oil pump itself. it will usually draw oil from the pan then, but you should check for oil pressure with "crank only" before giving a new motor ignition.

got my own ultra-gauge the other day. i thought it was bigger. i emailed them to request being a beta tester on the next version which will have some manufacturer specific PID & DTC scanning. This means that it should be able to read oil pressure on 2003+ GM stuff. you may be able to update the firmware on existing ones as well.

It would be rad if it read oil psi! But the set up I got from you is a 2001? I forget, oh well. Still happy with the gauge overall! Trying to run brake lines right now, have that poly shit from speedway and it's a pain in the ass!

Yeah, unfortunately on 2002 and earlier the ECM does not monitor the oil pressure. the sensor is a single tan wire that ran directly to the dash cluster. I can see oil pressure with HP Tuners on 2003+!

I could probably go back and look at your specs, but what is your Trans, Tcase, R/P, Tire specs?, ratio's, etc? I bet you could pick up some good HP "feel" with different gearing.

I still have some fine tuning to do and am gonna go to 5:38 in the axles shortly and hopefully getting a 3 speed tcase! It has way more then enough just wheeling trails and stuff, just wouldn't mind more when Im blasting dirt roads and whoops playing prerunner.

don't go too deep on the R/P. I only run 4.88 and wouldn't want any lower, but I do have a 3.06 first gear. With a multi-speed Tcase you can overcome most if not all your wows. like you said, "you have enough when crawling." I assume when you say "3 speed case" you are talking Stak? With the new company take over and parts and fixes up in the air i wouldn't touch one with a 10ft pole.

Ill second that with a stak... I have a d300 replace a case w/heavy duty outputs... And getting it to shift sucks!

I have also owned a 2 and monster 3 speed... They never made it into any rigs... Sold and bought an atlas!
