Ultra slow chassis build

Well this all started many many moon's ago over a drunk'in conversation down at K.O.H. and the ball was set in a very very slow moving roll. the main thing's i wanted was a chassis that i could beat the shit out of and never worrie about it. i decided to go with cromo mainly cuz i could get a stupid good deal on it. this build started off shooting for the moon and since i have two teen age boy's it has been pulled way back.........waaay back. this whole build is not a priority to me and i play with it as time and money permit's. my wife and I and all about our family and we spend a ton of time with our boy's. it's not uncommon to be at somesort of a sport event 7 day's a week between games and practices.

Anyway's the main chassi is 1 3/4 .120 wall cromo and a mix of 1 1/4 and 1 1/2 here and there. the biggest concern's for me was that i had enough room for my fat ass to be comfy all day long. i bought a truck load of tube around 280 feet and started hoarding parts. the list of junk as follow's

Chassis spec's
all cromo (had to be Tig welded that was the deal I made to the guy I got the tube from )
fit for a fat guy
110 w/b
54 inches wide
TC FJ40 hood and grill

DRIVETRAIN SPECS
6.0 LS engine
Mast motorsports Head's
custom ground cam by Erson
hex adjust timming set
Morel lifter's that get rid of the gay plastic insert's
F.A.S.T. truck intake for 102mm throttle body
Badass rocker's
custom built stepped header's by Paul Barrett
built TH400 trans
3.8 Atlas case
narrowed Dana 60 front
14 Bolt rear with C&C hub's
PRP low back Comp fat boy seat's
FSR Dual pass radiator, trans cooler, engine oil cooler and p/s cooler
22 Gallon fuel cell
2.5 7075 lower link's
2" upper's
1.250 heim's
14" Bilstein coilover's

I found a few pics of old progress and parts so here you go

SEAT'S PRP COMP LOW BACK'S WITH POCKET'S AND ADJUSTABLE HEAD REST

HEAD'S

LINK'S LOWER

DUAL PASS COOLER'S

F.A.S.T. INTAKE TO FACTORY COMPARO

SHE'S A FISTER

COOL CLEANABLE BILLET OIL FILTER

DID MY OWN ENGINE HARNESS OFF A FACTORY ONE

NOW FOR THE CHASSIS. SINCE WE ALL HAVE SEEN TUBE BENT I WON'T WASTE UR TIME AND FASTFORWARD TO WHEN IT CAME HOME A COUPLE MONTHS AGO

TIG WELDING THE CHASSIS UP

not much progress but at least more parts are being added to the pile

she sure has a purdy mouth

and look's good on too

Also machined my lower chassis side link tab's

other then that the tube showed up and it has been cut and bent just need to notch and tack it in then on to linking this bitch

I bought some PVC and cut it up to mock the links up and get demension's from there. all look's killer now i can't wait for the real thing

this is the way i plan on doing the exhaust and header's. i dont care for how close the header is to the valve cover so i figured i would roll it up a bit and make more room. just idea's

Talking with the guys at Atlas I was told that rear support ring is only advisable on a tube chasis as it will break the rear of the tranny off on a rig with any sort of flex. Everything is coming together so nice!

I think using that mount keeps you from breaking tranny housings!!! Im using a very similar mount like he has and dont use the foot on the bottom of the adapter at all....the rear atlas support ring mimics the way the factory mounts stuff in a triangle (2 fr motor mounts and a center mounted trans ...) this allows some flex so hard parts dont break...

This is just my opinion.... and my shit is never gonna break since it never gets wheeled!!!

its good to see you stopped trying to get crazy with the subframe and just did what most people do....simple and effective!!! the plus to your frame being wider, is that those subframe tubes can go straight up and down...mine actually flare out for more room in the belly to fit things.....

oldest boy got a concussion this weekend at football camp so i spent some time in the garage mainly cleaning but worked on the engine skid. originally it was to have a 180* bent tube but with the new subframe that wasnt going to work which is fine it was kinda ugly reminded me of Umfoofoo with a lip plate lol

this is what i came up with

And the finished template
of course it will have some speed holes to lighten it up and make it look cooler and hope that it helps cool the pan too. the bottom will also be covered in uhmw shit. i also plan on putting some more attaching points to the motor mounts and in the flat area more cross pieces to strengthen it up

Im not sure I agree. My cardboard skidplate was kinda weak and the first water crossing it fell off. I think the design is good but chose some different material.

i forgot to mention above that the Umfoofoo lip plate engine skid didn't give me much room around the front diff yoke and i didn't much care for that it looked like atride height it would be even with the yoke and maybe .250 of clearance. this design gives me soooo much more room

Small Update spent a small fortune on NI99 rod ( cough $110.00 a lbs ) but I paid less then half that and I also bought 10 lbs of filler rod for the chassis for a deal that I couldn't pass up.. like close to the amount I paid for 1lbs around here now if my life would slow down I might be able to make some more forward progress

I did manage to go out a mock up the engine skid side plates and they fit near perfect. I do need to open up the bolt hole for the lower link a bit but other then that it's dead on. now I need to drill the side hole's where it attached to the block. a few months ago I bought a set of metric transfer screws so that will go quick. Also getting the brackets for the front axle cut out so the front should be done very soon.....time permitting

Finally got around to working on the front truss and bracket's. now that I have a 1.5 week break from sports with my boy's. The lower link's where bugging the crap out of me and how they seemed unsupported, so i looked around and found some idea's but Rockapes design in the pass.side still appealed to me the most. I do wish they where angled but not a big deal. I made some templates and had the drafts man here at work draw them up in CAD then I ask Jesse to cut them out. All in all very happy with the out come

pass. side upper support. i like how it ties into the tube and cast to support the hell out of the tab's

both straight on

Lower side

Then the driver side pretty normal but I notched for the truss

And finally the truss back on...this was a huge pain in the ass to fit it but I got it

closer shot pass

top

driver side

Huge thanks to Mr. Haines for letting me bounce idea's off him and for cutting out my junk. Now onto welding

Damn.... Your rig is gonna weigh 6500 lbs! I like the truss, hopefully it doesnt hurt your uptravel or make your rig tall. Your chassis design like mine almost needs a step up in the front for axle uptravel.

Looks like your making progress! Thats a good thing.

THE CHASSIS DOES KICK UP IN THE FRONT AND ALSO NARROW'S. ROUGH MEASUREMENT'S IT LOOKS LIKE WITH 6 INCHES OF UP TRAVEL IT WILL HAVE RIGHT AT 1 INCH OF CLEARANCE BETWEEN TRUSS AND THE TUBE WHEN ON THE BUMPS. OVERALL HEIGHT WILL BE 73-74 TO THE TOP OF THE CAGE AND 20 INCHES OF BELLY WITH 40'S. THE TRUSS IT SELF DOESNT WEIGH THAT MUCH MAYBE A COUPLE POUND'S BUT I DO GO OVERBOARD ON EVERYTHING SO WHY NOT

Well since last weekend was basicly my last free weekend I went out and worked on it a bit more. I finished fine tuning the truss then tack welded it all together to double check everything once it's under the chassis also went down and bought more link material ( pvc ) and made the other two links to be sure how it looked and worked good. also cut out some quick .125 tabs to mock up the upper's. I knew the motor mounts I whipped up would be tight but once everything was in I'm not happy with them so I'm redoing them now. I've drawn up a few different designs but none of them do it for me so here are more pics

still playing with the motor mounts

I got a feeling you are gonna be offsetting that engine to the drivers side.Driveline, starter and exhaust clearance becomes a problem even with extra room on the passengers side for it.

Headers are pretty much needed to be on the engine at mockup, unless you are building them laast to clear stuff.

It does look tight but the diff yoke and the case yoke are not inline. i have yet to measure it but i would guess the diff side is 3 inches toward the middle compared to the case. the diff yoke is very close to the oil pan but plenty of room. i'm sure i will be running a 2 pcs front drive line. i think i might have time this weekend to play with this again i do plan on building exhaust after it's all in. it will be one of two way's. up and forward header's like for turbo car's then "Y" it together in the front and then run it back...or up and back header's ontop of the cover "kinda" and "Y" it and go down the back of the bell housing and into the muffler. we will soon find out i should get my 14 bolt rear this week and then it's rear mock up

I do have an in for header's.. a long long time buddy of mine build's header's for super stock, pro stock and alot of NMRA guy's for a living and he already volunteered to build some. good thing is that once a year his whole family goes to Tahoe for vacation and he said he would just cruise over a couple day's

well it's been a little bit but here we go.... i had my storage broken into and a ton of shit stolen which included my seats and some other stuff for the buggy so now i have taklen a couple steps back. i have decided to change it up a bit. the main change i made was to the upper links from aluminum to steel. mainly this will now allow me to link the toyota with the aluminum i had for the upper and the remaining steel material for the upper's on the yota too so anyways i was also thinking of mounting the shock's on the lower link but now honestly i could care less anyways here is a few pics of the new shit

2" .250 wall cromo upper's ....yeah i know over kill but hey that's how i roll JACK !!

and possible rub rail for the chassis. it's 4130 solid only down fall is its 1.125 o/d
but it was free

for now that is all

in closing fuck theives in the ass with a freight train

TOOK THE BOY TO THE IRONMAN THIS PAST WEEKEND IN RENO. THE TOURNAMENT YOU WRESTLE ALL THREE STYLE'S FOLKSTYLE, FREESTYLE AND GRECO. NORMALLY IF YOU WIN ALL THREE IT'S CALLED A TRIPLE CROWN. IN THE PAST THE RARE TIME THAT A KID DOES THIS THEY NOT ONLY GET THEIR MEDAL'S BUT THEY ALSO GET A TROPHY.....WELL WE WENT UP FRIDAY NIGHT AND STAYED THE NIGHT TO BE SURE THE BOYS (LIL HARVEY AND SHELDON II ALONG WITH MY WIFE, BIG HARVEY AND HIS WIFE DANA) WHERE RESTED. WE GOT UP AND HEADED IN FOR WEIGHT IN'S AND BOTH BOY'S WHERE PRETTY FLAT. EITHER WAY THEY WENT OUT AND DESTROYED THE COMPETITION AND GOT 1ST PLACE IN GRECO AND FREESTYLE. THE NEXT DAY THEY BOTH WRESTLED FOLKSTYLE AND AGAIN DESTROYED THE COMPETITION AND BOTH GOT A TRIPLE CROWN. THEN WE CAUGHT WIND THAT THERE WOULD BE NO TROPHIES THIS YEAR THAT THE CLUB COULDN'T AFFORD IT....TO HELL WITH THAT I'LL BUY THEM ONE. ANYWAYS AT THE END OF THE DAY OUR CLUB TOOK HOME NOT ONE BUT THREE TRIPLE CROWN CHAMPION'S. IT WAS FREAKING AWESOME CONGRATES TO THOSE BOYS FOR ALL THEIR HARD WORK. COUPLE PICS WE TOOK

SHELDON AND HARVEY HIS MAIN COACH ON THE LEFT AND WILL ON THE RIGHT

AND A PIC OF ALL THREE BOY'S AND THEIR MEDAL'S
LEFT TO RIGHT WILL, BRADY O', SHELDON, LIL HARVEY AND MIKE ALL FROM THE BULLDOGS

PICS WITH THE SWAY BAR IN.....GETTING PRETTY TIGHT

QUICK VIDEO OF ME SCREWING AROUND WITH A BRIDGEPORT

WITH ALL THIS MOCKING UP AND ME AND MY O.C.D. AND OVER THINKING EVERYTHING I FOUND THAT THE WINCH PLATE WONT WORK FOR ME IN THE INTENDED STOP BECAUSE IT'S TO NARROW. IM NOW THINKING OF CUTTING THE FRONT OF THE CHASSIS OFF AND MOUNTING THE WINCH BEHIND THE GRILL
